WOW-Wanderlust on Wheels Idaho and Eastern Oregon to the Columbia River

Windy walk along Columbia River

Our drive today took us the Idaho to Eastern Oregon. We drove over several passes and saw the beautiful snow covered Sawtooth Mountain Range in the distance. We stopped at Baker City, Oregon, another important stop on the Oregon Trail and home of the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretation Center. We saw replicas of the wagons used on the trail and walked around the historic downtown. It was extremely windy all day and a bit difficult driving to keep camper f rom swaying.

Walking around Baker City

We left Baker City and headed to a stretch of very flat land. My son Dan who is a geologist happened to call as we were driving thru and he told us that about 17 million years ago, easter Oregon was flooded with molton lava and these layers cooled into the flat basalt plains were were driving through. Interesting.

We headed north toward the Columbia River and stopped in Boardman for the night at a county campground. . It was a nice place right on the Columbia River with a beach, disc golf course, and laundry which we needed desperately..We did laundry while we cooked and ate supper then took a nice long walk thru the park on the Riverwalk. Tomorrow we head to the Columbia Gorge.
